#7: Damn Selene - Tales from the Road and the Trenches
2020 has been a difficult year for so many of us, for so many reasons. Now, think about having everything the year has brought you to deal with, then add on a battle with mental illness, and the challenges that being a part of the LGBTQ+ community brings, no matter how good or bad things in the world are. Then, with everything going on in your world, you still have a job to do, helping people cope with their own mental illnesses.
Selene Toffoli, better known to the world as Damn Selene, lives this reality every day. They are a rap artist out of Denver, Colorado, as well as working in the mental health field as a peer mentor/support specialist. Their latest album is Nobody By That Name Lives Here Anymore, a compilation of singles and pieces of other projects that have been in the vault over the last several years that come together to form a cohesive picture of Selene and their personality, as well as their view of the world.
Selene shares many stories from their road tours over the years, including ghost towns, odd venues, and the ups and downs you face as an independent artist. Selene also shares a lot of wisdom about the importance of mental health and the reality of what marginalized groups at home and abroad face as the social/political climate reaches a boiling point.
